Mathematics and Statistics Support Assistant
Coventry University
Part time - £13.33 to £15.86 an hour, depending on qualifications and experience

Working in the Coventry University Campus Library, you will provide mathematics and/or statistics support to all Coventry University students who seek additional academic help by attending the sigma facilities.

Your main duties will include:

*Support students proactively and sympathetically with the mathematically and/or statistically based questions that they bring to the drop-in centre and to other sigma activities.
*Support students studying different disciplines across the University using a broad spectrum of mathematical or statistical knowledge.
*Choose approaches to teaching and learning appropriate to students' backgrounds, levels of understanding and knowledge base, wherever possible within the context of their field of study.
*Facilitate group work wherever it is appropriate, ensuring this is not disruptive to others.
*Independently manage the facilities during a period of duty, while maintaining good order, a quiet atmosphere conducive to study, and a transparently fair system of sharing the help during busy times; in particular, ensuring that student visits to drop-in centres are recorded.
*Follow up questions that cannot be answered during the session, either by referring students to colleagues who have greater expertise in a given field or by personal study to learn the relevant material.
*Be alert and adapt to meet the needs of students with special needs or requirements, including cultural or linguistic difficulties or any kind of disability.
*Abide by the University Health and Safety and Data Protection policies and practices at all times.
*And such other duties as are within the scope and spirit of the job purpose, the title of the post and its grading.

Required qualities:
*An degree with a strong analytical/quantitative focus, covering one of the subject areas of the University. Qualifications or experience in statistics are particularly useful.
*The ability to tailor teaching style to a diverse range of students
*The ability to communicate answers in language that meets the needs of the learner
*The ability to inspire and engage a student's interest
*The ability to instil confidence in students and encourage them to become independent learners
*The ability to manage a learning space with authority and fairness
Advantageous qualities:
*Experience of teaching mathematics to university students
*Experience of tutorial work dealing with unseen problems without advanced warning
*Experience of working with students who lack in confidence or have disabilities
*A flexible approach to working additional hours at short notice in order to provide emergency cover
*Willingness to work evenings and weekends
